Cheryl's Soup Kitchen™
Sara's Soup Story
I discovered the joy of making soup in my post-college days while earning my degree as a Sign Language Interpreter (I'm not an interpreter anymore . . . just placing it in the timeline).
I love a good cuppa tea. When visiting Ottawa I went to a great little tea room called the Mad Hatter's Tea party. Their menu consisted of afternoon tea (with scones and finger sandwiches) or sandwiches and soup. I loved their soup so much, I bought their little self-published soup cookbook.
At some point, I started making the soups and I realized how fun, easy and healthy it was. My friends used to laugh when they walked into my apartment and their were 3 or 4 pots on the stove - each a different kind of soup. They used to say that my hand blender was my best friend!
I explained that I made different kind of soups and enjoyed them all week with a piece of hearty bread. It made eating well during the week very easy. If I had leftover soup, I just froze it to keep it fresh. Hot soup, in its many different varieties, was just perfect for the cold Rochester Winter. (I'm in Toronto, Canada now - still cold!)
Where I am now
Now I am a busy mom of 2 adorable little kids. My son, age 5, is a VERY picky eater. And no matter how hard I try, I can't get my kids into eating soup.
So...it's pretty sad...
I spend most of my cooking time making "kiddie food" (very plain - but healthy - foods my kids will eat) or cleaning up in the kitchen. I don't really cook for myself or nourish my body the way I should.
A few weeks before I saw the ad for the Cheryl's Soup Kitchen, and I thought that I should try to get back into making soup. It might also help me to lose some of the baby weight that I've had for WAY too long. I even looked up "soup diet" on the internet - but all that came up was the cabbage soup *fad* diet - forget it.
Anyway, I used to make this amazing butternut squash soup that I wanted to try again. So I bought a butternut squash. And it sat there...and sat there...and sat there...Till I had to buy another one because the first one started to ROT!
How sad - I know.
So...
When I saw the website for Cheryl's Soup Kitchen I thought - "Perfect!"
Maybe I just need some inspiration! Maybe I just need to hear someone talk about how wonderful soup is to be inspired again. Maybe I just need some new hints and tips about how to make it faster and easier. Maybe I just need some new recipies and techniques. Maybe she has a method I don't know about yet. Maybe she could teach me how to use soup to lose weight. I wonder how she's going to teach a cooking class on the phone anyway -- it will be fun to find out. (I've often thought about teaching a tofu teleclass...) Maybe she could even give me some advice for getting my kids to try it!
