In a study that may offer new evidence of the hazards of secondhand tobacco smoke, researchers have found that people who are exposed to it may be more likely to develop diabetes. The researchers reached their findings after tracking the health of more than 4,500 people over 15 years. Some were smokers, some were nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke, and some were people who had no exposure at all. See the article here.

Puzzling differences have emerged between men and women with heart disease, making it plain that past studies, mostly done on men, do not always apply to women. Researchers have come to realize that to improve diagnosis and treatment for women, they must sort out the differences.

Did you know that lack of sleep can be a risk factor for hypertension? In a study of more than 4,800 men and women, people ages 32 to 59 who got five hours of sleep a night or less were about 60 percent more likely to develop high blood pressure than those who slept six to eight hours.
